What is allopurinol 300 mg tablet used for?
Allopurinol is used to prevent or lower high uric acid levels in the blood. It is also used to prevent or lower excess uric acid levels caused by cancer medicines or in patients with kidney stones. A high uric acid level can cause gout or gouty arthritis (joint pain and inflammation).
When is the best time to take allopurinol 300 mg?
Swallow your allopurinol tablet with water, ideally after food. You’ll usually take it once a day, but if you’re on a high dose, your doctor may advise you to split the dose and take it twice a day.
How long does it take for allopurinol to reduce uric acid?
It may take two to six weeks before allopurinol effectively reduces gout attacks. It is not unusual to experience a gout attack in the first few weeks of allopurinol initiation. In people with severe kidney disease, a dosage of 100 mg/day or 300mg twice a week may be sufficient to reduce high uric acid levels.
